Washington DC has experienced eight tornadoes between 1814 and 1995, with half rated as the stronger F2 and F3 category storms, and the other half in the weaker F0 and F1 range [1]. The rarest and most destructive tornados strike the city occasionally, but smaller tornadoes tied to tropical systems do touch down here with some regularity. The most famous tornado in DC history occurred on August 25, 1814, during the British occupation of Washington [2]. That tornado struck the city and reportedly helped drive British forces out of the area, making it a peculiar kind of weather event in the city's military history.

Other significant tornadoes followed over the next century. A tornado on November 17, 1927, touched down near Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, and threatened the Washington DC area [3]. The region has continued to experience tornadoes in more recent decades as well. On September 24, 2001, an F0 tornado touched down in Washington DC as part of a larger regional outbreak [4], causing damage to the DC Armory and striking near the National Mall and US Capitol. More recently, on April 6, 2017, an EF0 tornado touched down in Southeast DC near Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, with a path length of 1.56 miles [7].

The human cost of these storms has been substantial. It's worth noting that official National Weather Service storm records for Washington DC date back to 1950 [9], meaning our understanding of earlier tornado activity relies on historical accounts and local records rather than standardized meteorological data. This gap in documentation shapes how much we know about DC's tornado climatology, and some historical events may be underrepresented in the formal record.
